Specific Aim: To determine whether behavioral instruments developed to investigate social skills in other clinical populations could be useful in the evaluation of social communication abilities for persons with traumatic brain injury.

Sample: 162 persons with moderate to severe TBI who are participants in the TBI Model System study and are at least 1-year post-injury; 162 age-, education-, and gender-matched non-injured persons from the social network of the person with TBI will serve as control subjects; and 162 family members or friends of the person with TBI. All participants must be at least 18 years old.

Design: Comparison of performance between persons with moderate to severe TBI and their matched controls on behavioral measures that assess receptive, processing, and expressive aspects of social communication abilities. Assessment of relationship between performance on behavioral measures of social communication and a rating scale of social communication skills completed by the person with TBI and a friend or family member.

Predictor Variables: Demographic variables; Injury-related variables; Receptive social communication measures (emotion recognition, social problem identification); Processing social communication measures (generation of solutions to social problems); and Expressive social communication measures (behavioral ratings of discourse, social problem-solving abilities). Social communication measures used in this study were previously used with the following clinical populations: schizophrenia, stroke, heterosocial dating, and TBI.

Primary Outcome Measure: LaTrobe Communication Questionnaire - Self-rating form; Family/friend rating form.
